STUDENT RESEARCH PROJECT
ChildSafe
Explainable internet access management
The question
How can parents manage a child's internet access while understanding why a website is allowed or blocked? ChildSafe explores the connection between network enforcement, risk signals, and clear explanations.
The prototype
An Android Agent uses Android VpnService and HEV tun2socks to route traffic to a Parent Server. The Python/FastAPI server combines parent-defined rules with domain and text analysis. A dashboard exposes controls, device information, access records, and explanations.
What to try online
Open the interactive demo, compare the Learning and Gambling signals samples, apply an allow rule, and pause internet. Observe how the policy decision changes while the detected risk remains visible. The News context sample illustrates a context-sensitive keyword check.
The browser demonstration runs locally on supplied text and domains. It does not fetch pages, connect to phones, send alerts, or enforce real network restrictions. All session records are simulated. The browser policy layer is simplified; the keyword engine adapts the supplied fallback rules.
Engineering focus
- Integrating Android traffic routing with a parent-controlled server.
- Recording the source and reason behind access decisions.
- Handling network interruptions and reducing blocking work in the request path.
- Refining keyword matching and context checks to reduce accidental matches.
Evidence and limitations
The supplied research report describes student and parent needs surveys and software tests using synthetic inputs. The development journal records device-oriented debugging and recovery work. These sources do not establish population-wide effectiveness or a production safety guarantee.
The supplied installation includes support for TF-IDF and Logistic Regression but contains no trained model file. The current online demo uses the keyword fallback. Its scores are heuristic, not probabilities of harm. It does not decrypt private HTTPS sessions or read all private in-app content.
Technology and acknowledgements
ChildSafe builds on Android VpnService, HEV SOCKS5 Tunnel, FastAPI, SQLite, and Python libraries. The project focuses on integrating these components with access policies and explanations. This brief is based on the supplied ChildSafe 1.2.2 source, research report, and research journal.
